Heterocycles Containing Nitrogen and Sulfur as Potent Biologically Active Scaffolds
Heteroaromatic rings have been extensively used by medicinal chemists to design new drug candidates. The presence of a heteroatom in the ring has been shown to increase not only the pharmacological activity but also the pharmacokinetic properties of the compound. The goal of this chapter is to summarize some relevant data about sulfur and nitrogen containing heterocycles as benzothiazines, phenothiazines, thiazoles, or thiadiazoles, among others. Together with their main pharmacological properties, some interesting aspects of their synthetic procedures are mentioned.
