Privileged Scaffolds in Medicinal Chemistry: An Introduction

Medicinal chemistry has as its main mission the understanding of molecular reasons for the activity of a drug or drug candidate. Several different strategies and approaches could be used to achieve the molecular design of new structures, among them the concept of privileged scaffolds. In this introductory chapter, the scaffold approach will be discussed, using several selected examples that are connected with the following chapters of this book.
