Continuous-Flow Functionalization of Furfural: Synthetic Strategies for Furan-Containing Value-Added Chemicals

Abstract

Furfural is a primary platform chemical derived from lignocellulosic biomass which serves as a critical bridge between renewable feedstocks and high-value synthetic intermediates. While modern furfural utilization is primarily centered on the production of commodity chemicals, it represents a sustainable source of the furan ring. Furan motif highly sought-after in both medicinal and synthetic chemistry. This review explores the advancements in continuous-flow furfural functionalization strategies that are redefining the synthetic utility of furfural. We examine a diverse range of fine transformations including aldol-type condensations, C-H acylation, furan ring diversification, decarbonylative couplings, and multicomponent reactions under continuous-flow conditions. By merging organic synthesis with continuous-flow technology, these methods provide a robust framework for the sustainable production of furan-containing value-added chemicals.
