Fluids at electrode/membrane interfaces suppress alcohol crossover in CO electroreduction

Abstract

Electrochemical CO reduction currently suffers from the crossover of liquid products, culminating in high costs for downstream separation. Here, we leverage the difference in the driving forces of alcohol and acetate crossover and address the issue by introducing pure-water fluids at the cathode/membrane interfaces of zero-gap CO electrolyzers.
