Heterogeneous Mediate-Free Photoelectrochemical Organic Transformation
Abstract
The principles of green chemistry have profoundly influenced the field of synthetic chemistry by promoting the adoption of catalytic methodologies. One recent development in this area is electrophotocatalysis, a novel catalytic paradigm that integrates homogeneous photocatalysis with electrochemical stimulation. This innovative technique seeks to address the persistent challenge of selectivity in organic transformations, a crucial factor for efficient and targeted chemical reactions. Recent advancements have also led to the emergence of heterogeneous photoelectrocatalysis systems, which eliminate the reliance on homogeneous pigments, thereby improving the overall efficiency of these catalytic processes. In this perspective, we aim to delineate the differences between electrophotocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis, especially in the context of green chemistry principles as they apply to organic transformations. Additionally, we will review recent breakthroughs in photoelectrocatalysis and identify potential pathways for future research in this rapidly advancing field. Through our discussion, we will underscore the significance of these methodologies in fostering sustainable practices within chemical synthesis, ultimately contributing to a more environmentally friendly approach to organic synthesis.
