Recent Advances of the manganese-copper bimetallic oxide catalysts for catalytic oxidation of VOC: types, preparation methods and catalytic performances

Abstract

Manganese-copper bimetallic oxide catalysts (MnCuOx), composed exclusively of Cu, Mn, and O, have emerged as a prominent class of economical and highly active materials for the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in this field, systematically organized into three focal areas. First, it delineates the diverse types and structures of MnCuOx catalysts (e.g., CuxMn3-xO4, Cu doped MnOx CuOx/MnOx, CuOx/CuxMn3-xO4), highlighting the composition characteristics and physical-chemical properties of each type. Subsequently, the synthesis methods are critically compared, including co-precipitation, sol-gel, hydrothermal synthesis, and combustion techniques, with an emphasis on their influence on the physicochemical properties and activity of catalysts. It further evaluates the catalytic performance of these catalysts in typical VOC oxidation such as toluene, acetone, and benzene. It discusses the structure-activity relationships, reaction mechanisms, alongside the current challenges regarding stability, moisture resistance are outlined. The perspectives on future research directions aimed at designing next-generation MnCuOx catalysts with enhanced efficiency and practicality for environmental applications are highlighted.
