One Electron Be-Be π bond

Abstract

Metal-metal bonding has attracted chemists for a long time. One such intriguing example is beryllium-beryllium bond. Herein, ab initio quantum chemical calculations reveal the formation of one electron π bond in diatomic Be 2 -anion. The anion is stable towards spontaneous electron detachment. Although diatomic Be mono and di cation are well studied, the present study provides the first instance of diatomic Be 2 monoanion.
