Oxidant-controlled divergent construction of sulfenylsuccinimides and sulfonylsuccinimides via Mo-catalyzed C–S cross-coupling

Abstract

We herein present that a Mo-based catalyst can effectively promote the selective synthesis of sulfenylsuccinimides and sulfonylsuccinimides from maleimides with thiols by the use of air and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant, respectively. Mechanistic investigations suggest that a thiyl radical is generated from thiol and phosphomolybdate via an intervalence charge transfer transition from MoVI to MoV. This protocol exhibits the use of a green oxidant, easy manipulations, gram-scale reactions, and catalyst recycling.
