Hydride-Mediated Ammonia Borane Dehydrogenation in Water by Arene-Ru(II) Catalysts Revealed through Real-Time Gas Evolution

Abstract

Arene-Ru(II) complexes catalyse efficient Ammonia Borane (AB) dehydrogenation in water at 25 °C, delivering high TON and TOF. Kinetic analysis reveals pseudo-first-order behaviour on both [Ru] and [AB]; a hydride-Ru intermediate supports the proposed mechanism. The catalysts retain activity over nine cycles, releasing up to ~3 equiv of H2 per AB.
