Bio-based upcycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) waste to UV-curable polyurethane acrylate

Abstract

Bio-based chemical upcycling of PET is a promising way for PET waste utilization, as it comprehensively considers sustainability and economic benefits. However, existing research is limited to the glycolysis of PET with ethylene glycol. Herein, we propose a strategy for the chemical upcycling of PET using bio-based cardanol diol for the synthesis of polyurethane acrylate (PUA). By optimizing the reaction conditions, the complete glycolysis of PET by the cardanol diol can be achieved within 20 min under solvent-free conditions at 230 °C. The glycolysis products can be used without purification for the synthesis of PUA UV-curable coatings, exhibiting good mechanical and coating properties. The present strategy provides a platform for the chemical upcycling of PET using bio-based materials, which may further extend the use of PET waste.
