High-entropy materials: synthesis and energy storage applications

Abstract

Energy storage technology is rapidly advancing, driving a growing demand for high-performance energy storage materials. Recently, high-entropy materials (HEMs), as novel multi-component material systems, have demonstrated broad application prospects in energy storage. This review is dedicated to comprehensively summarizing concepts and definitions, synthesis methods and application progress of HEMs for use in energy storage. First, concepts and definitions relating to HEMs are expounded upon, and newly emerged high-entropy concepts are briefly introduced. Subsequently, various synthesis methods for HEMs are discussed in depth, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method are meticulously analyzed. In terms of energy storage applications, this review focuses on the application of HEMs in batteries and supercapacitors, covering cathodes, anodes and electrolyte materials. In addition, the potential applications of HEMs in other fields, such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis and thermoelectricity, are briefly discussed. Finally, future directions for the development of HEMs are outlined to provide reference and inspiration for further research and applications of HEMs.
