Antiferromagnetic properties of the intermetallics Ce3Ni2X7 (X=Ge or Sn)

Abstract

Electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements have been performed on the isotypic compounds Ce 3 Ni 2 Ge 7 and Ce 3 Ni 2 Sn 7 . The ternary germanide orders antiferromagnetically below T N =7.0(2) K, a Néel temperature higher than that observed for Ce 3 Ni 2 Sn 7 [T N =3.8(2) K]. This investigation allows proposal of a direct relationship between the Ce valence and the smallest interatomic distances d Ce-Ni and d Ce-Sn for the ternary stannides existing in the Ce-Ni-Sn system.
