Radiolysis of aqueous solutions with pulsed helium ion beams Yield of (SCN)2-formed by scavenging OH as a function of SCN-concentration

Abstract

The concentration dependence of G[(SCN)2-] in the radiolysis of aqueous KSCN solutions with pulsed 24 MeV He2+ ions has been measured. The yield increased with increasing concentration below 0.1 mol dm-3, and in the measured concentration range the yield for 21 MeV He2+ was smaller than for an electron beam. The results have been compared with the reported GOH derived from various scavengers. The data did not agree at high scavenging capacity. It was suggested that the product yields do not equal GOH because part of the products disappear by intra-track reactions at high scavenging capacity particularly in high linear energy transfer (LET) radiolysis. It was confirmed qualitatively by the deterministic diffusion kinetic calculations.
