Cyclisation of metal chain complexes: X-ray crystal structures of [Pt3W4(µ-CR)23-CR)2(CO)8(η-C5H5)4] and [Pt4W4(µ-CR)(µ3-CR)3(CO)8(η-C5H5)4](R = C6H4Me-4)

Abstract

The pentanuclear metal complex [Pt3W23-CR)2(CO)4(cod)2(π-C5H5)2](R = C6H4Me-4, cod = cyclo-octa-1,5-diene) reacts with [W([triple bond, length half m-dash]CR)(CO)2(η-C5H5)] to give [Pt3W4(µ-CR)23-CR)2(CO)8(η-C5H5)4], and the latter with [Pt(C2H4)3], prepared in situ from [Pt(cod)2], yields [Pt4W4(µ-CR)(µ3-CR)3(CO)8(η-C5H5)4] containing a Pt4W4 ring; the structures of these metal cluster complexes have been established by X-ray diffraction.
