Infrared spectra of CO adsorbed on Si, Ge and ZnS evaporated films

Abstract

Infrared spectra of CO adsorbed on high-surface-area Si, Ge and ZnS evaporated films were investigated in the temperature range 77–100 K.

Two absorption bands were obtained in the 2200–2000 cm–1 region. For Si and Ge substrates the bands showed similar behaviour towards desorption and surface oxidation whereas for ZnS the introduction of O2 to the cell had no apparent influence. The results are explained in terms of CO physisorbed on two different sites present on the substrates' surfaces.
