The blue supersulphide ion, S2

Abstract

Spectroscopic investigations into solutions of alkali polysulphides in dimethylformamide showed that the formal oxidation state of the species giving rise to the intense blue colour of these solutions is –½. With the actual charge found to be one half of that of a polysulphide ion, the species is identified as the supersulphide ion, S2.
