cis-Stilbene as an intermediate in the photochemical cyclization of diphenylacetylene to phenanthrene

Abstract

In the photolysis of diphenylacetylene, phenanthrene may be formed via cis-stilbene rather than by an internal rearrangement of diphenylacetylene.
