Single-crystal absorption spectra of crystal field bands of bivalent vanadium ions in vanadium dichloride and related environments at low temperatures

Abstract

Visible and near-i.r. spectra of single crystals of VCl2, KVCl3, and V2+ doped crystals of CdCl2, KCdCl3, and NaCl at temperatures down to those of liquid helium are reported. Methods of preparing the compounds in high purity and suitable form are given. Vibrational effects and intensity anomolies found at low temperatures are discussed.
