The synthesis of two 3,3,3-triarylpropenes and two 2-methyl-3,3,3-triarylpropenes

Abstract

The syntheses of 2-methyl-3,3,3-triphenylpropene and 3,3,3-triphenylpropene, and the p-methoxy-derivative of each are described. Notable features are the ready dehydration by phosphoryl chloride in pyridine of two sterically hindered tertiary alcohols which are unaffected by sulphuric or phosphoric acid; the efficiency of the reaction of two triarylmethyl Grignard reagents with ethylene oxide; and the use of aqueous dimethyl sulphoxide as solvent for the base-induced dehydrochlorination of two primary alkyl chlorides.
