Pyrano[4,3-d]pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines were synthesized via a two-step process starting from 4-chloro-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines. Sonogashira cross-coupling yielded the corresponding alkynes, which underwent TfOH-mediated cyclization under superacidic conditions. This late-stage functionalization approach led to the synthesis of 13 novel tricyclic compounds.
