Facile, single-step process for the preparation of controlled release formulations of ibuprofen in a hydrophilic matrix using supercritical CO2
Abstract
A green, single-step process has been proposed to prepare a controlled-release formulation of Ibuprofen (IBU) in a hydrophilic matrix. The method uses CO 2 in its supercritical state as the processing solvent. ScCO 2 is highly diffusive and can induce melting in PEG, leading to homogeneous mixing of the drug and excipient. This results in better impregnation of the drug. The scCO 2 -processed drug-excipient composite has been compared with the one prepared in acetone, a conventional volatile organic solvent. The pH dependence of drug release and the stability of the composite formed have also been investigated. The results indicate that scCO 2 processing can be a more environmentally friendly alternative to existing techniques, offering greater simplicity and industrial viability.
