Research Progress on the Synergistic Promotion of Water Splitting Process by Oxyanions
Abstract
Hydrogen production via water electrolysis is recognized as one of the most promising strategies for generating renewable hydrogen energy. Facing the current "Dual Carbon" goals, this technology holds significant importance for both environmental sustainability and economic development. In recent years, oxyanion strategies have drawn great attention due to their ability to significantly enhance the catalytic performance of water electrolysis, demonstrating considerable research and application potential. This review systematically summarizes the main approaches for incorporating oxyanions into electrocatalytic systems, outlines the roles of various types of oxyanions in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and provides an in-depth discussion on the mechanisms of representative oxyanions. Furthermore, the key functions and mechanistic pathways of oxyanions in the water electrolysis process are clarified. Finally, the opportunities and challenges facing oxyanion modification strategies for future large-scale applications are summarized and prospected. This review aims to offer theoretical insights and practical guidance for further research on oxyanions in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting.
