When Does Cytosine Dimerize? A Protonation Window for the Charge- and Resonance-Assisted [CytH+…Cyt] Synthon

Abstract

This study defines the conditions under which protonated cytosine dimers prevail in nitrocarboxylate salts. X-ray diffraction reveals the solid-state assemblies, calorimetry determines the relevant protonation window, and DFT explains how proton activity, stoichiometry, and hydration stabilize persistent dimers.
