A Beginner’s Guide to Spin Crossover

Abstract

Spin crossover (SCO) complexes are an important class of molecular magnetic switch with applications from data storage to highly responsive sensors. In this tutorial review we explore basic concepts in the field, the key techniques that are used to monitor SCO in molecular systems and the design principles that are needed in the discovery of new SCO systems. With a focus on structural studies, we highlight how X-ray crystallography can be used to determine the spin state at the metal centre and the supramolecular contacts that influence the packing and spin state patterning in SCO complexes. The advent of sophisticated crystallographic techniques is turning the dream of molecular devices into an ever closer reality.
