Chiral Dy(III) single-molecule magnets supported by thiophene-substituted hexaazamacrocycles

Abstract

Introducing sulfur‑containing groups into single‑molecule magnets (SMMs) can facilitate their deposition on conductive or superconducting surfaces. Here, we report the design and synthesis of the first pair of enantiomeric Dy(III) hexaazamacrocycles functionalized with thiophene substituents. These complexes feature a near‑linear axial O–Dy–O geometry and a relatively flat equatorial coordination plane. They exhibit effective anisotropy barriers exceeding 1500 K, in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations, and display magnetic hysteresis up to 12 K.
