Flash-Joule Heating Enables Rapid Solid-State Synthesis of Multinary Chalcogenides: A Case Study on Cu2Mo6S8
Abstract
Achieving rapid, energy-efficient, and scalable synthesis of multinary chalcogenides remains a significant challenge in solid-state chemistry. In this study, we introduce the use of an emerging Flash-Joule Heating (FJH) technique for the ultrafast production of Cu2Mo6S8, a classic Chevrel phase material. Experiments with flash heating demonstrated reaction times under a second at temperatures exceeding 2000 °C, while step heating offers a more controlled, scalable, and phase-pure synthesis method. Comparing these approaches reveals their respective strengths and suggests new pathways for faster, more sustainable synthesis of complex inorganic solids.
