Understanding alkali cation regulation of oxygen evolution on nickel (oxy)hydroxide

Abstract

The OER performance of Nickel (oxy)hydroxide strongly depends on electrolyte cations. Here, we reveal a clear activity order of KOH > NaOH > LiOH with decreasing activation energies. Larger cations promote *OH adsorption and Ni 2+ oxidation, weakening Ni-O bonds and lowering reaction barriers, improving the OER performance.
