Catenated nitrogen-rich triazine-tetrazole molecules for advanced explosives and gas-generator applications

Abstract

Catenated nitrogen-rich energetic materials are essential for gas-generating and high-energy-density applications. Here, we developed two novel compounds: tricyclic compound 5 with 4+3+3 nitrogen catenation and tetracyclic compound 8 with 4+4+3+3 catenation. Both are fully characterized and exhibit high densities (1.83 and 1.80 g cm−3), good thermal stabilities (176 and 188 °C), good detonation velocities (7794 and 7935 m s−1) and pressures (22.9 and 24.3 GPa), and high insensitivity, and compound 8 shows favourable DDT behaviour as an initiator.
