Visible-light-driven N=N bond functionalization of azobenzenes

Abstract

Direct N=N bond functionalization of azobenzenes has traditionally been challenging. Previously, only a few examples were achieved through thermochemical approaches. In recent years, our group has combined the advantages of modern organic photochemical synthesis to innovatively develop a series of visible-light-driven N=N bond functionalization reactions of azobenzenes, making important contributions to the development of this field. While providing relevant context, this feature article focuses on our latest advancements in visible-light-driven N=N bond hydrofunctionalization and cyclization of azobenzenes. Special emphasis is placed on the conceptual ideas, synthetic advantages, and mechanistic findings of each synthetic transformation and reaction strategy. The article also looks forward to the future development direction of this field. This review provides a clear overview of this promising area to encourage further research.
