Nitrogen-rich hyper-cross-linked polymers for rapid and selective bilirubin removal in hemoperfusion
Abstract
Liver failure causes the accumulation of endogenous toxins in the blood; their efficient removal is crucial to support hepatic recovery. Hemoperfusion is an effective detoxification modality but remains limited by the performance of adsorbents. Herein, we report a benzotriazole-functionalized hyper-cross-linked polymer (HCP) with excellent performance as a hemoperfusion adsorbent for the removal of bilirubin. The synthesized HCP exhibits outstanding performance for bilirubin capture, delivering a maximum adsorption capacity of 877 mg g−1 and an equilibrium capacity of 195 mg g−1. This work expands the application of HCPs and provides a viable construction strategy for the development of hemoperfusion adsorbents.
