Base-controlled divergent synthesis of cyclopropyl aryl methanones from homopropargylic alcohols with DMTST

Abstract

A method for synthesizing cyclopropyl aryl methanones from homopropargylic alcohols using dimethyl(methylthio)sulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonate has been developed. The reaction selectivity, governing the formation of cyclopropane or methylthio-cyclopropane architectures, is controlled by the choice of base. This reaction is initiated by the hydroxyl group and proceeds via intramolecular cyclization.
