Electrochemical synthesis of cyclic sulfites using diols and sulfur dioxide

Abstract

We report a simple protocol for the electrochemical synthesis of cyclic sulfites. Starting from diols and easy-to-handle stock solutions of SO2, the reaction features a quasi-divided cell setup under constant current conditions. The feasibility of this novel electrochemical dehydrative reaction is demonstrated by a broad scope of 20 examples, achieving yields of up to 87%.
