Introduction of seven nitro groups on the 2-azaadamantane scaffold via a two-shell arrangement strategy

Abstract

A two-shell arrangement strategy was successfully applied to the azaadamantane scaffold. With this strategy, seven nitro groups were introduced and the target product 2,9,9,10,10-pentanitro-2-azaadamantane-4,8-diyl dinitrate and its derivative 2-nitro-2-azaadamantane-4,8,9,10-tetrayl tetranitrate were prepared. The former exhibits a high density (1.878 g cm−3), together with an excellent detonation velocity (8914 m s−1) and pressure (36.16 GPa). More importantly, this strategy provides a new route to polynitroazaadamantanes with more than six nitro groups.
