Research progress of environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings

Abstract

Marine biofouling has brought a serious impact on human marine production and transportation activities. Applying antifouling coatings is an effective method to prevent marine biofouling. Here, we have conducted a systematic review of the development of environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings in the past three years. Firstly, we briefly introduce marine fouling organisms and their growing process and then classify antifouling coatings into 5 parts according to different antifouling mechanisms. While analyzing the advantages of the coating, we also point out the existing problems in the research of the material. Finally, we present the directions of antifouling coatings in the future, aiming to provide new ideas for developing new antifouling coatings and technologies.
