Removal of hydrocarbon contaminants from water with perfluorocarboxylated UiO-6X derivatives

Abstract

We report that treatment of UiO-66 and UiO-67 with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA) not only render the MOF hydrophobic but also capable of removing hydrocarbon contaminants from water. Additionally HFBA@UiO-66 can coat water droplets, yielding liquid marbles that can be placed in organic solvents without dissolution or dispersal.
