Redox reactions of halogen for reversible electrochemical energy storage

Abstract

Along with the great success of traditional lithium-ion batteries, the increasing energy demend promotes the rapid development of novel battery systems for even large energy density and high power density, and good safety. Typically, the novel forms of rechargable batteries based on redox reactions of halogen are attracting extensive attention because of the potential fundamental chemisty and promising applications. In this frontier, we give an overview of halogen chemistry in the rechargeable batteries and the key ideas for various halogen batteries are discussed with specilized analysis on the underlying mechanisms. Finally, the existing issues and the prespectives are also addressed for the future development of halogen battery system.
