Mn-Based tin sulfide Sr3MnSn2S8 with a wide band gap and strong nonlinear optical response

Abstract

A new quaternary Sn-containing sulfide (Sr3MnSn2S8) was synthesized using a traditional high temperature solid-state method. It crystallizes in the space group I[4 with combining macron]3d with a = 14.2287(6) Å and Z = 8. Direct extrapolation using the upper tangent revealed an energy band gap at 3.02 eV, larger than that of AgGaS2 at 2.65 eV. Sr3MnSn2S8 exhibited a strong second harmonic generation response, almost equivalent to that of the benchmark AgGaS2, and its laser damage threshold was about 3 times that of AgGaS2.
