A stretchable and conformable alternating current electroluminescent device having a record maximum luminance of 450 cd m−2 is fabricated. When stretched, the luminance of the device monotonously reduces but still retains as high as 100 cd m−2 luminance at 500% strain. The device performance is stable in terms of mechanical robustness, cycling stretching stability, and long term stability. The high performance is achieved by using a new dielectric matrix (poly(styrene144-b-butyl acrylate938-b-styrene144)) for ZnS:Cu particles and a new solvent-free ionic conductor of the diblock copolymer of (ethylene glycol)9 methyl ether acrylate and n-butyl acrylate as transparent electrodes.
