Heterogeneous Visible-Light-Induced Meerwein Hydration Reaction of Alkenes in Water Using mpg-C3N4 as Recyclable Photocatalyst

Abstract

A green and efficient visible light induced Meerwein hydration reaction of alkenes in aqueous medium using mpg-C3N4 as recyclabe photocatalyst has been disclosed. This protocol provides adirect approach to preparation of racemic alcohols via a free radical mechanism without any additives or co-solvent. Water not only acted as solvent and reagent, but also promotes the reaction. The metal-free heterogeneous semiconductor is fully recyclable at least 5 times without significant reducing activity. The Meerwein hydration reaction has excellent substrate scopes and gave the desired products in moderate to hight yield. Furthermore, this reaction could be carried out under the solar light irradiation and applicable for the large-scale reaction with conserved results.
