Sharpening upconversion nanoparticles to reduce surface quenching

Abstract

Lanthanide doped upconversion nanocrystals with different surface sharpness are synthesized to study the surface effect on their optical performance. The nanocrystals with the hexagonal sharp surface could significantly reduce the surface defects and display luminescence intensity 2.5 times higher than that of nanocrystals with sphere shape.
