Supramolecular synthesis with N-Hetero-tolanes: Liquid crystals, hydrogen-bonded and halogen-bonded co-crystals

Abstract

Different co-crystals form N-Hetero-tolane derivatives are prepared by hydrogen- or halogen-bonding. Their crystal structures have been determined by Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction (SCXRD). Highly ordered smectic liquid crystals are obtained upon protonation of compound 1 which show a remarkable thermal stability. All supramolecular aggregates, crystalline or liquid crystalline, are characterized accordingly by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and thermal analysis (DSC)..
