Method development for the determination of bromine via molecular absorption of barium monobromide by high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry

Abstract

A challenging novel method was developed for the determination of bromine via molecular absorption of barium monobromide (BaBr) using a high-resolution continuum source electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer (HR-CS ETAAS). After optimization studies, 250 μg of Ba as nitrate and sample (or the calibration standard) were co-injected into the graphite tube and molecular absorption of BaBr was measured at 520.819 nm by applying a pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C and a volatilization temperature of 2200 °C. The calibration curve prepared from NaBr was linear up to 1 μg of Br. The limit of detection and characteristic mass of the method were 1.7 ng and 4.0 ng of bromine, respectively. The spiked concentrations added to some drug samples were recovered with 4% error. The concentrations of bromine determined in various drugs were in agreement with the values reported by the manufacturers.
