Poly(MMA-co-FMA) as a Platform for Tuning Emission by Clicking with Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes

Abstract

In this work, we reported a facile approach for preparation of lanthanide metallopolymers with tunable photoluminescence by using the Diels-Alder (DA) click reaction. First, poly(MMA-co-FMA) platforms bearing furan groups were prepared and used as clickable diene, while trichromatic lanthanide complexes (Eu(DBM)3MP, Tb(p-BBA)3MP and La(BTZ)3MP, in which MP is 5-maleimido-1,10-phenanthroline) containing maleimide were synthesized and used as dienophiles. By simply mixing and heating lanthanide complexes and polymer, no catalyst and harsh reaction conditions are required, a series of novel metallopolymers poly(MMA-co-FMA)-Ln (Ln=Eu, Tb and La) were fabricated by the Diels-Alder click chemistry between poly(MMA-co-FMA) and the MP ligand of lanthanide complexes. Emission colors of resulting metallopolymers can be easily regulated by varying the feed ratios of lanthanide complexes. With further optimizing the ratio of the three complexes in the metallopolymer, we have successfully obtained the emission of white light. This straightforward strategy gives access to the construction of metallopolymers with tunable photoluminescence.
