Metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts for reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrogen: mechanisms, recent advances and perspective

Abstract

In recent years, electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) and reduction of nitrogen (NRR) have attracted more and more attention owing to their possibility to transform the energy from renewable and clean sources to chemical energy stored in value-added chemicals such as hydrocarbons, alcohols and ammonia (NH3). Meanwhile, CO2RR could also reduce the global carbon footprint and solve the global climate change issue while NRR could significantly improve the energy efficiency in the NH3 production procedure. However, because of the inert CO2 and N2 molecules, electrocatalysts with low overpotential, high selectivity and superior Faradaic efficiency (FE) are required to boost these two kinetically slow reactions. This review for the first time discusses the similarities and differences between CO2RR and NRR in the following aspects: (1) fundamental theory of reaction mechanisms and corresponding catalysts designing principles; (2) reaction systems and products analyzing methods; (3) recent advances for heterogeneous electrocatalysts synthesized from different metals with various compositions, structures and morphologies. Much progress has been achieved to improve the catalytic performance towards CO2RR and NRR. Finally, an outlook of future developments for CO2RR and NRR is proposed.
