Glassy carbon electrode modified with an ordered mesoporous carbon/Ag nanoparticle nanocomposite for the selective detection of iodate

Abstract

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with an ordered mesoporous carbon/Ag nanoparticle nanocomposite, namely an OMC/Ag-NP-modified GCE, was prepared by casting an OMC/Ag NP nanocomposite on a GCE. The morphological properties of the OMC/Ag NP nanocomposite was characterized by applying various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the electrochemical properties of the modified electrode were investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The electrocatalytic reduction of iodate on the modified electrode was also studied using cyclic voltammetry as well as by using amperometric methods. The prepared modified electrode showed good electrocatalytic properties, fast response time, good stability and reproducibility. The performance of the sensor exhibited a linear range from 15.0 × 10−6 to 4.43 × 10−3 M with a limit of detection of 3.01 × 10−6 M (S/N = 3), and the sensitivity of the sensor was found to be 1.92 μA μM−1 cm−2. The modified electrode was applied successfully to the determination of iodate concentration in salt samples using the amperometric method, which demonstrated the applicability of the modified electrode.
