First glimpse at a calixarene clathrate

Abstract

The 1979 X-ray crystal structure of the p-t-butylcalix[4]arene toluene 1 : 1 intra-cavity inclusion complex proved a landmark result that established the iconic calixarene shape, proved the tetrameric calixarene structure and showed that an intrinsic molecular cavity in an artificial receptor could contain a guest molecule.
