{[Co2(ndc)2(bpee)2](bpee)}: a 3D multifunctional MOF

Abstract

A new multifunctional 2-fold interpenetrated 3D metal–organic framework (MOF) {[Co2(ndc)2(bpee)2](bpee)} has been synthesized by a solvothermal technique from a mixture of Co(NO3)2, 6H2O, ndc and bpee with addition of 1 ml Et3N (ndc = 2,6-napthalene dicarboxylic acid, bpee = 4,4′-bipyridine ethylene). X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that complex 1 was crystallized in the P[1 with combining macron] space group with the Schlafli symbol {36.418.53.6}.{36.418.53.6}. The micro-porous complex contains large void space for accommodation of guest bpee after interpenetration. Adsorption study with the evacuated complex indicates that it selectively adsorbs 40.5 ml g−1 CO2 and 29 ml g−1 benzene but can't adsorb N2 and can be potentially used for benzene storage. Guest dependent magnetic behavior of the complex has been studied. Magnetic ordering is enhanced on removal of guest. The evacuated complex is a soft magnet and exhibits a square hysteresis loop.
