The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of the phase equilibria in the titanium–carbon system are generalised. The generalised thermodynamic characteristics of disordered titanium carbide TiC
y
, are reported. Peculiarities of the crystal structures of all the known and hypothetical compounds of titanium with carbon are considered in detail. The X-ray diffraction patterns which allow identification of all these compounds are presented. The phase diagrams of the Ti–C system constructed with allowance for atomic ordering of non-stoichio metric carbide, TiC
y
, and for the existence of the molecular cluster-like compounds Ti
