The isonitrile-mediated conversion of tricarbonyl(vinylketene)iron(0) complexes to tricarbonyl(vinylketenimine)iron(0) complexes occurs with retention of configuration at the iron centre revealing that there are no symmetrical species along the reaction coordinate.
