Convenient, low-energy synthesis of metal sulfides and selenides; PbE, Ag2E, ZnE, CdE (E = S, Se)

Abstract

Reaction of elemental metal Pb, Ag, Zn and Cd with sulfur or selenium in liquid ammonia at room temperature for 2–12 h produces highly crystalline PbS, PbSe, Ag2S, Ag2Se and X-ray amorphous ZnS, ZnSe, CdS and CdSe in virtually quantitative yield.
